How to Plan a Stress-Free Family Ski Trip When Kids are Young

Smiling Park City family posing with their ski rentals

Planning a family ski trip to Park City is exciting, but let’s be honest, it can also feel like a lot to figure out.

Before creating this guide, I talked to families who visited this past season, and one thing came up again and again:

The difference between an amazing trip and a stressful one usually comes down to a few small decisions. The most impactful decisions were the ones that minimized carrying gear, followed by ease of getting back and forth, snacks, and things like being prepared for your ski and snowboard rental fittings.

Between my own experiences, interviewing others, and the collective knowledge of Park City Sport’s 40+ years of service, here’s how to get it right.

The Biggest Pain Point to Avoid: Carrying Gear

If you do nothing else, solve this.

The number one complaint from families? Carrying loads of gear. Not the skiing. Not the cold. Not the kids. It’s all of the gear.

Carrying skis, poles, boots, helmets, snacks, extra layers, multiplied by however many people are in your group, back and forth to your lodging is where the day can start to fall apart. It’s exhausting, awkward, and usually where meltdowns happen. Especially with kids.

The families who had the smoothest trips all had one thing in common: They didn’t carry their gear around all day.

Pro-tip: Create a “Home Base” on the Mountain

This makes a huge difference in your day-to-day experience for your family ski trip.

Instead of hauling everything with you, set up a home base right at the mountain. At Park City Sport, you’re steps from the lifts at Park City Mountain, which makes it incredibly easy to pop in and out throughout the day.

Here’s how to use it:

  • Come in wearing your street shoes
  • Change into your ski or snowboard boots at the shop
  • Leave your street shoes in a free cubby
  • Put anything valuable in a secure, coin-operated locker

Then go ski.

No carrying everything. No juggling bags. No dragging kids across the base area in ski boots.

And the best part? You can come back anytime.

If you need an extra layer, more snacks, fresh hand warmers, etc – it’s easy to come back and grab what you need.

When you have kids, you’re always carrying more than you want to. This setup lets you carry less, and enjoy the day more.

Ski and Snowboard Rental Tip: Bring the Socks They’ll Actually Ski or Ride In

This tip is from Dean, an owner of Park City Sport, and it saves a lot of hassle:

Have your kids wear the exact socks they’ll ski or ride in when they come in for their boot fitting.

Here’s why it matters:

If they try boots on with one pair of socks and then switch to a different pair later, the boots can feel completely different. What felt great in the shop can suddenly feel tight, loose, or uncomfortable on the mountain.

That usually means coming back in for adjustments, which takes time and can be frustrating when everyone just wants to get out and ski. So make a note to bring the socks they’ll actually wear on the hill, and the fit will stay consistent from the shop to the slopes.

Make Mornings Easier: Pick Up Equipment Rentals the Day Before

Mornings with kids + ski school check-in = chaos if you’re rushed. This has an easy solution: you can usually pick up your ski and snowboard rentals the day before (at no extra cost) after a certain time.

This can really simplify your first morning. You can still stop by the shop and change into your boots, stash your shoes, and then head straight to ski school or the lifts.

With Little Ones: Make Getting to the Lifts Easy

This is where a lot of trips get harder than they need to be. It’s not just about where you stay, it’s about how easy it is to get back and forth. With kids, every extra step adds friction.

Look for:

  • A short walk to the lifts
  • A hotel shuttle
  • A bus stop right outside

Shorter, simpler trips to and from the mountain make a big difference, especially at the beginning and end of the day when everyone’s tired.

And just as important: make sure it’s easy to get back if you need to.

Whether it’s a quick break, a forgotten item, or a kid who’s done for the day, having a simple way back keeps things from turning stressful.

Ski School: Book Early and Know the Basics

If you’re planning on lessons, book early – especially during peak dates. Both Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley have full-day programs for children as young as 3 years old (caveat – they must be potty trained). This can be a great option for parents to enjoy some adult time while the kids are learning and playing games.

Park City Mountain

  • Lessons for ages 3–14
  • Full-day options typically include lunch
  • Helmets required for anyone under 18
  • Booking a lesson can help secure lift access

Deer Valley Resort

  • Lift tickets are limited and should be booked in advance
  • Lessons for ages 3–17
  • Early drop-off available (starting around 8:30am)
  • Helpful waitlist if dates fill up

Quick Tip: No Outside Instructors

Both Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley require lessons to be booked through the resort. Outside instructors aren’t allowed, and using one can result in lift tickets being revoked.

The Parent “Survival Kit” (Keep It Light)

You don’t need to carry a full backpack all day, especially if you’re using a home base. Though always keep a few essentials on you:

  • Snacks
  • Sunscreen
  • Hand/toe warmers (in the colder months)

Take breaks frequently with little ones, often before you think you need to. Kids last longer, and have more fun, when they stay fresh and fueled.

Sometimes the best part of a family ski trip is the hot chocolate break.

What You Actually Need to Pack for a Family Ski Trip

There are a few things really matter, and the rest can be purchased or improvised. This is my personal list of essentials:

  • Warm, waterproof jacket and pants
  • Base layers
  • Proper ski/snowboard socks
  • Good gloves or mittens
  • Goggles
  • Helmet (often easier to rent than pack)
  • Neck warmer, buff, or balaclava
  • Sunscreen
  • Hand and toe warmers (game changers on cold days)

Make a simple checklist for the morning to make sure you have everything before heading out the door.

Pro Tip: If you have younger kids, a ski vest harness can make life much easier. It helps with getting kids on and off the chairlift, lifting them up after falls, and giving you a little more control while they’re learning. It’s one of those small things that can make your day noticeably smoother.

FAQs About Planning a Family Ski Trip

What’s the best age to start skiing?

Most kids can start as early as 3–4 years old with ski school. The key is keeping it fun and low-pressure.

Do kids need lessons every day?

Not necessarily. A couple of lessons at the start of your trip can build confidence, and then you can mix in family ski time.

What is the biggest challenge for a family ski trip?

Managing gear and logistics, especially carrying equipment back and forth. Solving that upfront makes everything else easier.

What gear do you need for a family ski trip?

Focus on the essentials: warm waterproof clothing, base layers, proper socks, gloves, goggles, and helmets. Add small extras like warmers and a face covering for comfort.

What do families need to bring to their ski and snowboard rental fitting?

Bring the socks you and your kids will be using to ski or snowboard in. That way the fit stays consistent from when you are set up to when you are actually on the mountain.
